October 6, 2017 Huntsville Rotary Club Minutes

( The following report is courtesy of Bishop Roy )

President Ken rang the meeting into session with a gentle tap of the Rotary bell.  He asked John Sommer to return thanks for the food and fellowship.  Our pledge was given to the flag of the United States,  then the meeting began in earnest.

There were no guests to recognize, no old business and no new business either.  Resident Forecaster and all around good guy, Dan-O Shepherd indicated that we were in for a period of rain and cooler temps.  But he did observe that there was no frost in the foreseeable future, temperatures would moderate, and eventually settle into a more Fall-like pattern.

District Governor Allen Garner was introduced by President Ken.  The governor indicated he was here for the local club.  “…the governor provides support to the local clubs.”  He continued with the promise to help with the growth and health of our club as well as all the clubs in the 6040 District.  Garner went on to highlight some distinctions about the Huntsville Club.  One distinction is the legacy of Ed and Margaret Kimbrough.  Because of the generosity of the Kimbrough estate,  Huntsville Rotary stands out in advancing the District Grant Fund as well as the Rotary Exchange Program.

The District Grant Fund affects the local clubs and communities by awarding grants and matching funds to parks, schools, and Interact Clubs.  This is a primary example of the Rotary motto in action “Service above Self”.  Garner also addressed the need for reaching new Rotary candidates which included adaptive or evolved clubs that met on a more flexible schedule.  These changes, Garner explained, are needed to reach a more mobile group of candidates.  A brief period of questions and answers followed the governor’s program.

Brother Clay gave the final word.  President Ken awarded the governor a fine Huntsville Rotary pen. With that gesture, our president rang the dismissal bell for another successful Rotary meeting at Don’s Family Buffet.

The following Rotarians answered the call of the opening bell:  Mike Cochran, Jerry Crutchfield, Chris Dady, Dub Hayes, Clay Joiner, Gerald Link, Roy Morales-Kuhn, Mark Nichols, Ken Rathmann, Merl Riley, Mark Samp, Charlie Serio, Dan Shepherd, John Sommer, and Wayne Wilcox.
