May 26, 2017 Huntsville Rotary Club Minutes

There were 16 Huntsville Rotarians and 3 guests on this final Friday meeting of the 5th month who were enjoying the noon buffet at Don’s Family Style Restaurant in Huntsville. Due to our President, and President-Elect,  being unable to attend, Secretary-for-Life Richard stepped up to the gavel and called the meeting to order a few minutes early.  Bishop Roy offered our Prayers of Thanks to our Lord, then we saluted the flag and pledged our allegiance. Dub’s Guests were introduced, his sister-in-law Barb, and her son Brad.

Under Old Business, Richard noted our Club had passed the motion made last week to apply for a District Matching Grant of $1,000, which the application is due May 31st.  No New Business was offered, so weatherman Dan gave us an unpleasant wet forecast, noting he had to replant the sunflowers due to hail and wet weather. Many roofs in Huntsville were severely damaged by the hail last week along with cars not under shelter.  Soybean plants may have also suffered as well as wheat and some corn.

Chris then offered the program today by introducing Jim Nugent, Director of the Jacksonville Veteran’s Cemetery. Jim presented some video and slides of the cemetery and explained the qualifications for interment.  An applicant must meet Veterans status, and, the spouse of a Veteran may also be provided with burial space.  Jim noted there are 7 employees at the Jacksonville site, and possible burial space for 43,000 Veterans.  There are 5 such Veteran Cemeteries in Missouri, with the Jacksonville site being established in 2003.

Richard mentioned that Charles’ program next week will be two ladies from the Safe Passage Shelter and will talk about the Shelter and upcoming Wine Stroll fundraiser.  Dub was asked to give the Last Word, then we were adjourned.

Members present today:  Phil Brown, John Cochran,  Mike Cochran, Jerry Crutchfield, Chris Dady, Kyle Dignan, Charles Fleming, Harry Hall, Dub Hayes, Russ John, Roy Morales, Mark Nichols, Merl Riley, Dan Shepherd, Richard Tregnago, & Wayne Wilcox.
