June 23, 2017 Huntsville Rotary Club Minutes

There were 18 Huntsville Rotarians and 3 Guests today at Don’s Restaurant attending the 4th meeting of the 6th month.  President Tim rang the bell at 12:30 p.m. to open his next to the last meeting as our Leader and we were offered Prayers of Thanks to our Lord followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.  Guests introduced were Moberly Rotarian, Dr. David Fincher, and two of Dan’s guests, Kevin and Vicky McGraw.

Under Old Business, Clay noted they were working with the Huntsville Park Board for possible benches at the City Park as part of our District Grant process.  Also mentioned was our attendance at the Moberly Rotary Club on Thursday, July 6th, due to Don’s being closed for a week’s vacation that week.  Dan gave us a mild weather report this next week with some light moisture scattered about.  Sweet corn and sunflowers are coming along fine in Pecan Valley.  Our annual dove hunt on September 1 at Shepherd’s Farm will require a donation to our Foundation.  Dan indicated first come ( send in your $125.00 ) will have a reserved spot, anticipating another sell out early.  Contact Dan for more details if needed.

Today’s program was our own Dub Hayes, 90 years of life experience, and 60 years worth of pest control knowledge were presented.  Dub had radio shows in Kansas in the early 1950′s and became popular calling square dances. One of his memorable times came about as he was invited to Saudi Arabia  in early 1970′s for a week to call square dances at the request of some American businessmen for their convention.  Another unusual feat was the fumigation of an Indian mummy for the Smithsonian Institute so it could travel across State lines bug free.  While he has slowed down somewhat, Dub is still an active exterminator with a thriving business.

President Tim noted that Russ will be out of town, along with his family, to attend his grandson Paden’s wedding, leaving us without a program for the 30th.  We are to attend the Moberly Club on July 6th in lieu of our normal Friday meeting on the 7th.   Tim asked Dub for the Last Word… a quote from famed singer Eddie Arnold…” If someone is paying you, you owe them the best you’ve got!”  Then we were adjourned.  Next week is Tim’s last official day at the dais.
