January 26, 2018 Huntsville Rotary Club Minutes

The final meeting of the Huntsville Rotary Club  in the 1st month of 2018  found 14 hungry Rotarians enjoying the noon buffet at Don’s Family Style Restaurant.  President Ken called the meeting to order at 12:30 pm and asked Bishop Roy to return our thanks in prayer to our Lord, followed by our reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.

No guests were in attendance and no new business conducted, however, under old business, Secretary-for-Life Richard mentioned the need to select an incoming President-Elect for 2018-2019.  Gerald Link graciously accepted the mantle and was applauded for his notable service.  Gerald also read a letter that informed this audience that the Randolph County Commission had voted 2-1 to not provide additional funding to the Extension beyond that amount required by Statute.  Commissioner Wilcox voted against the budget that would defund Extension, and, Moberly Area Economic Development Corporation.  An emergency meeting at the Extension office will be held next Tuesday to discuss options which may include closing the Extension in Randolph County, which may mean closing our 4-H, County Fair,  Master Gardeners, and other programs, too.

Our weather forecaster gave us a nice warm prediction until later in the week as we return to colder weather for February for a couple of weeks.  Dan is also our Foundation Chair and stated a 50% discount for Paul Harris Fellowships is still available.  Merl indicated he has invited a couple of new member prospects to attend our meetings.

Our Leader then turned over the program to Clay.  Clay gave us a brief background on his father & grandfather who were house painters in their prime.  Clay’s dad had enlisted in the Army before WWII and re-enlisted during the war.  Originally had hoped to be a painter aboard ships, instead was trained in electronics, and also had a stint as a bandleader.  Clay assembled a diorama of a hangar and two airplanes with soldiers on the base for our Club to admire, and, he brought along a hardback book with pictures and descriptions of soldiers in the 364th Fighter Group, emphasizing the utility of the P-38 twin engine fighters in WWII.

President Ken noted that Mark Nichols is on the slate for a program on Ground Hog’s Day, then we were adjourned.

Members in attendance today were:  Phil Brown, Mike Cochran, Jerry Crutchfield, Chris Dady, Clay Joiner, Gerald Link, Roy Morales, Mark Nichols, Ken Rathmann, Merl Riley, Mark Samp, Dan Shepherd, Richard Tregnago, & Wayne Wilcox.
