Huntsville Rotary 05 May 2017

Huntsville’s Cinco de Mayo meeting was kicked off by President Tim welcoming the members and visiting Westran Interact members. The members welcomed 30 Interact students, including sponsor Ashley Roberts.  Tim asked Brother Ken to open in prayer. Besides the Interact students, Bill Stewart of Moberly Rotary was also a guest. Treasurer Mark Samp announced that all financial obligations were met for the week. It was also announced that clubs that have not participated in the shoe drive have the option to donate cash to the cause. Rotarians voted on the issue and it was passed. Dan Shepherd then gave the weekly weather report. He indicated that all frost danger was past and anyone who wanted could plant “em mators”.  Then  he announced the annual fish fry to be held at the Lodge of Two Shepherds on May 16 at 6 p.m.  All members attending were asked to bring a covered dish, with something in the dish to eat.

Cosponsor of Interact Roy Morales open the annual Interact program with a reciting of the 4Way Test questions. Morales and Clay Joiner co-host this annual event to recognize the achievement of the Westran Interact Club.  Morales turned the floor over to Ashley Roberts, the Westran sponsor of Interact.

Ms Roberts gave a full update on the Interact’s events and projects of this past school year.(2016-17) Roberts introduced the two RYLA recipients, Jackson Truesdell and Kendra Long. They will be attending the first session of RYLA in Fulton this June.  Interact also manned a sock drive to provide resources to a homeless shelter in Columbia. Interact other activities included helping with the annual Rotary pancake breakfast during Old Settler’s last September, and bell ringing for the Red Kettle Campaign of the Salvation Army.

An Interact student, Marissa  then spoke to the group about their latest fund-raiser. Lory White has been battling cancer for the last couple of years. To aid in medical expenses for treatment, Interact held a t-shirt drive for White. The front of the shirts read, “Lunch for Lory” and the back read Exodus 14:14. The event raised $1,700 for the White family which will help to defray medical expenses.

Clay Joiner then gave each Interact student a gift bag filled with goodies and held several in-house contests for the students to win Rotary and Interact related prizes. The prizes included baseball caps, pens, pins and a soccer ball.  Interact membership pins were given to the new members which numbered about 14.  The RYLA attendees each received a pin recognizing their participation in that program.
